Powders and Bulk Solids Convey Systems

Conveying System

What is a conveying system?

In production plants, conveying systems are used to move a variety of materials from one place to another with minimal effort. A conveyor system may be powered by a motor, gravity, air, gas, or manually. These systems can be used to move materials such as fine, dry powders, like sand or flour, and temperature and/or air-sensitive bulk materials such as coal or plastic.

Effective, properly designed conveying systems can have a powerful impact on a company’s bottom line. These systems have been known to reduce power consumption, improve system reliability, performance, productivity, and safety.

What are the most common type of conveying systems?

There are two types of conveying systems seen most often in bulk powder and solid materials handling: pneumatic conveying systems and mechanical conveying systems. The main difference between these systems come down to design. Pneumatic systems use a gas stream or vacuum to transport materials while mechanical systems use belts, rollers, and motors.

Pneumatic conveying is the process of transferring dry bulk materials through an enclosed pipeline using a suspended gas stream. A pneumatic conveyor can be suitable for a range of process industries including food & beverage, pharmaceutical, textile, and paper.

Specifically, pneumatic conveying breaks down into two main categories: dilute (or lean) phase and dense phase. Lean phase conveying is the most common method for transporting powders or granules at a higher speed and lower product-to-air ratio. Dense phase conveying uses a lower speed and higher product-to-air ratio for highly abrasive or fragile materials.

Mechanical conveying is the process of transporting usually heavy bulk materials using traditional machinery such as belts, tubes, or even vibration. Mechanical conveyors are highly effective for transporting over a short distance. A mechanical conveyor can be suitable for use in process industries including minerals, plastics & rubber, and chemicals.

What materials are used in pneumatic conveying?

A pneumatic conveying process is best for fine, dry powders such as:

  • Flours: Soy, Wheat

  • Starches

  • Sugars

  • Sands

  • Pelletized Materials

What materials are used in mechanical conveying?

A mechanical conveying process is best for temperature- or air-sensitive products such as:

  • Alumina

  • Cement

  • Coal

  • Plastics

The advantages of conveying systems

Conveyor systems are one of the best investments for companies looking to reach maximum efficiency. Automating key processes in your production process can ensure your company remains competitive. When properly designed and implemented, these systems can help cut costs, improve productivity, and reduce human error. Advantages of conveying systems include:

  • Lower Production Time

  • Increase Productivity

  • Retain Product Quality

  • Cost Saving

  • Less Spillage & Dust

  • Leakage

  • Better Sanitation

  • Enhanced dust control

  • Enhanced operator and plant safety
